Woman born without uterus gives birth!

A woman in the US has given birth to a baby after she successfully underwent a uterus transplant, according to media reports. The woman from Dallas was born without a uterus. In medical terms, the condition is called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome. It is a first-of-its-kind case in the US although Sweden had already seen eight such cases before at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg. The mother, whose name, hometown and date of birth are withheld for privacy purposes, received a uterus from a donor last year at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. She delivered a baby boy there last month at the hospital.

Other than the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, women undergo uterus transplants for a variety of different medical reasons. Some lose their uterus due to illness and complications resulting from cancer. In some cases, the uterus is not fit to facilitate pregnancy or conception. According to studies, up to 15 percent of the reproductive population in the world is infertile and 3-5 percent of these cases are caused due to uterine dysfunction. With only surrogacy and adoption left as options to women with reproductive difficulties, uterus transplant gives a ray of hope to many such women who wish to conceive but cannot due to such complications. According to a report by the New York Times, in US alone 50,000 candidates are waiting in line for a new uterus. Did you know that pollution caused infertility?

But these transplants are not permanent because leaving it inside the woman’s body for too long will cause the immune system to reject it. To avoid that, she may have to be on immunosuppressive drugs all her life, which can cause side effects. So the uterus left inside the body long enough to help her with the conception and delivery (or deliveries) and then removed after the use is fulfilled.
