Ready for the tress? | Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

The next time, you hear the word tress, don’t confuse it with lustrous hair. It’s a new edgy ensemble, which is a combination of a trouser and a dress. While stylists are divided over its risque look and cut, the tress has clearly won over Hollywood celebs including Scarlett Johansson, Nicole Kidman, Christina Hendricks, Katy Perry and Rita Ora. We asked designers back home whether the style will catch on here and which Bollywood actress can flaunt it gracefully.

‘Tress is more costume than fashion’Nachiket Barve

Tress works for events like the Grammys and the MTV awards, where you are expected to break the norm. It’s more costume than fashion. It’s something that is prone to malfunction if the cut or fabric is not right. Someone tall, lean and athletic can carry it off. It’s more avant garde.

‘Ideal for people who have big hips’Pria Kataaria Puri

Tress originated in the Middle East where fashion conscious teens sport trousers over skirts. A lot of times, they don’t like to flaunt certain body parts. Hence, they team it up with a skirt. Personally, I’m not fond of trousers, but I find tress more appealing as it’s an elegant version of trousers. It’s more ideal for women who have big hips. In Bollywood though, Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor, who are svelte, can carry it with élan.

‘Tress calls out to powerful women’Nikhil Thampi

It is a style that calls out to powerful women. If it’s done well, it can look absolutely amazing. I see Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor wearing it. They have always been known for experimenting with new, unconventional styles and have pulled them off with utmost poise and grace.
