Product review: Organic India Pomegranate Vinegar

I had never heard of pomegranate vinegar (PV) before. So when I got the opportunity to review Organic India’s Pomegranate Vinegar, I was not sure what to expect. Personally, I am a fan of Organic India’s range of green teas and herbal infusions. Read the product review for Organic India Tulsi Ginger Tea. The company also manufactures and sells premium vinegar products such as apple cider vinegar and pomegranate vinegar. Much like its apple-cider counterpart, PV made by introducing the “mother” or the bacterial culture into pomegranate juice. Organic India’s version is said to be made of pomegranates imported from Spain and is 100 percent raw and unfiltered.

The product

Pomegranates are one of the most nutritive fruits with an impressive antioxidant profile. The fruit is great for the heart and is said to lower blood pressure and prevent cancer. The vinegar made from the pomegranate also rivals the fruits in health benefits. It’s a tonic for fat burning and contains the anti-viral malic acid. Apart from this, it also helps in fighting cholesterol. It can also be had as a digestive aid and is said to improve mineral absorption in the body. To add to its list of benefits, PV also helps improve memory, prevent mood swings and can fight cancer cells.

Like any other vinegar, PV can be used in the same way as apple cider vinegar. It can either be used as a salad dressing or a pickling agent. A few teaspoons of the vinegar can be added to warm water and had on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. The diluted solution can also be applied to the skin like a toner.

Organic India’s PV is packed in a glass bottle with a sealed flip top. Priced at Rs 699 for a 500ml bottle, it isn’t exactly inexpensive. The question is whether its health benefits can outweigh its steep price.

The review

If you expect PV to taste like the fruit, you’d be disappointed. It doesn’t any different from apple cider vinegar and if weren’t for the colour, you won’t be able to tell one from the other. Like ACV, the vinegar is tart, slightly sweet and fruity, but doesn’t taste anything like the fruit. Vinegar is a great weight loss aid. Studies in the past have hinted at its fat-burning properties. Here’s why you should use vinegar for weight loss. Research has also suggested that drinking a vinegar solution after meals keeps you satiated for longer.

To test out the theory, I mixed a few teaspoons of the PV with some warm water and sipped on it slowly after breakfast to see whether it can keep me satiated until lunch. And I was surprised to see that it did. Sipping on the PV solution surprisingly kept me fuller. I was stunned to see how well it worked. I also started my day with a few teaspoons of PV diluted with water.

The verdict

The price notwithstanding, Organic India’s PV is a great product. If you are someone who won’t put a price on good health, you should just go ahead and buy it. If you ignore the cost aspect, PV has many uses apart from a weight loss aid. You can use it for pickling or as a salad dressing. Since it helps tone the skin, PV is as good as ACV when it comes to beauty benefits.
