How Safe is Petroleum Jelly?

Though there has been hype about it being a potential carcinogen, petroleum jelly isn't harmful when applied to your skin or even ingested in small quantities from, say, your glossed lips.

"It's generally safe to use topically, and there isn't hard science that shows it causes cancer," says Megha Tollefson, M.D., a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic.
