the nose knows

We asked Rochelle Bloom, president of the Fragrance Foundation, for tips on how best to buy and wear perfume. Check out WH's guide to the best fragrances in "Special Delivery."

1. Don't Store It In The Bathroom. Heat, humidity, or exposure to direct sunlight can alter a fragrance's delicate balance and turn your favorite scent into a stinker.

2. Wear It Before You Buy It. Your body chemistry, skin type, hair color, diet — even your stress levels — affect the way a fragrance smells on you. Apply on your skin (don't just smell the bottle) and wait 10 minutes, giving it time to blend with your skin's oils.

3. Less Is Best. Just a few drops on your pulse points should be plenty. No one should be aware of your fragrance unless they are within an arm's distance of you.
