Winter hand care tips

Winters can spell doom for your skin, and the first signs of dryness show up on your hands. All the repeated washing during the day tends to dry out the skin and cuticles, and however much moisturiser you apply, you still end up with dry hands. The skin on the back of our hands is also a little softer than the rest of the arm, so they tend to wrinkle sooner than the rest too. Hence it is important to take care of your hands first and foremost. Read on to know how you can up your winter hand-care regime for buttery soft hands this winter!

Make friends with almond oil

Almond oil is one of the best oils for dry skin, and your hands will love them! They work very well on the skin, nails and cuticles too- all in one go. Apply a few drops of almond oil preferably every time you wash your hands and see the magic. At night, apply oil liberally before sleeping so that you wake up with soft hands in the morning.

Tip: Don’t forget to look for ingredient list when buying almond oil. Most brands sell petroleum oils with under 5% almond oil, or just almond essence. Remember to buy pure almond oil only! My favorite is Roghan Badam Shirin.

Don’t forget the sunscreen

When applying sunscreen as part of your daily skincare regime, don’t forget the skin on your hands. The soft skin on your hands is prone to sun-damage and needs to be protected. Also, if you drive a car or any other vehicle daily, you’d notice that your hands are always exposed to the sun more than anything. Re-apply the sunscreen every 2 hours to keep the skin safe. My favorites are Neutrogena sunscreen and L’Oreal sunscreen spray.

Always carry a hand-cream in your bag

It is not always feasible to apply almond oil through the day for a perfect hand care regime, so a good hand-cream is a must in your hand bag. Look for ingredients like shea butter, glycerin etc. in your hand creams. My favorite ones are TBS Hemp hand cream , Neutrogena Norwegian formula hand cream and L’Occitane Shea hand cream.

Weekly hand care routine is a must

Once every week, a dedicated hand care routine is a must to keep your hands soft. I like to follow a DIY manicure routine- after dipping my hands in warm water for about 5 minutes, I usually scrub the skin with a gentle scrub (you can mix honey and sugar and use it), file my nails and apply a good dose of almond oil and massage it in for a good 3-4 minutes. This simple 10 minute routine gives me soft hands for the rest of the week, and there are no fancy products and steps involved.
