“Will you marry me,†is one question that many women can’t wait to hear—but the way someone asks for your hand in marriage can suck all the romance out of a proposal. In fact, 33 percent of people say they were disappointed with their partner’s proposal, according to a recent survey of 2,000 adults conducted by the U.K.-based jewelry design service Hot Pink.
Most people from the poll blamed the location, saying it didn’t have any sentimental value to the couple. Others said the gesture simply wasn’t romantic enough.
Obviously, a proposal doesn’t have to go viral on YouTube to be special—and even “meh†proposals can lead to totally amazing marriages. So we asked real women how they were proposed to—and let’s just say not everyone felt like a fairytale princess.
“I came home after working a 12-hour shift, and my now-husband told me that the jeweler called and said the ring he ordered for me finally came in—even though that was the first I’d heard about it. He asked me when I wanted to get it since it made no difference to him. At the time it didn’t feel like a big deal, but now I wish he’d thought of something more special.†â€“Holly Wells
Keep Calm and Marry On
“It was a busy day at work, and to top if off, we had just moved into a new apartment—so I was stressed about unpacking. I reached my breaking point when I saw all of my husband’s unfolded clothes piled on our bed. I started yelling at him, and then he took my hand, smiled, and asked me to marry him. I was so excited… until a few days later when he said he only proposed to ease my bad mood. Our second anniversary is coming up, but I would’ve appreciated a bit more thought and romance than that.†â€“Christina Kasper

Bad Night’s Sleep
"We had talked frequently about my perfect proposal—how it would be a surprise and be totally memorable. Instead, he proposed to me on a Tuesday night right before we went to sleep. No sex, just bed. It may sound romantic to some people, but for me, that was the worst way to propose—not that it stopped me from saying yes." -Crescent Genevieve
