What Most People Hate More Than Pain

If you're a How I Met Your Mother fan, you're familiar with the slaps. In season two of the TV series, Barney has to choose between receiving 10 slaps from Marshall immediately or receiving five slaps whenever Marshall chooses. Barney chooses the latter but quickly regrets it since he now has to constantly fear and dread a slap.

A new study out of the U.K. suggests that most people agree dreading pain is an all-around sucky feeling. Researchers were interested in taking a closer look at how people anticipate pain, so they conducted two experiments: In one, the participants had to choose between receiving actual electric shocks—some more intense than others—at different times. In the second, they had to pick from options for hypothetical trips to the dentist, also involving different levels of pain. In both cases, most participants opted for the faster pain, even if it was more severe. Essentially, most people wanted to get it over with.

Granted, that doesn't mean that dread is actually worse than pain (since this study didn't look at that)—but if you're the kind of person who hates having things hanging over your head, it's a good reason to get that shot or complete that intense workout sooner rather than later.
