It is widely believed that red meat including mutton is ‘unhealthy’ especially for those aiming for weight loss, those who suffer from heart diseases and high blood pressure. But the fact is, as nutritionist Priya Kathpal says, in moderation, mutton has a whole lot of health benefits that you mustn’t deprive your body of. Here our nutritionist tells you how consuming mutton can help you lose weight and get glowing skin and other health benefits.

  1. Healthy dose of protein: Mutton is one of the sources of high-quality protein. 1 serving of protein contains approximately 20-25 gms of protein which is almost similar to the quantity of protein found in chicken.
  2. Good for weight loss: Its high protein content and low-fat content makes it an ideal meat for weight loss. Just make sure the mutton you eat isn’t fried.
  3. Great source of haemoglobin: Mutton consists of easily absorbed haem iron which is mostly seen in non-veg sources. Vegetarian sources including vegetables, eggs, fruits or grains contain non-haem iron which is not absorbed so easily by the body.
  4. High in vitamin B12: Mutton has a high quantity of Vitamin B12. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry concluded that increasing dietary intake or supplementation of vitamin B12 along with omega-3 fatty acids could significantly reduce the chances of blood clot formation (resulting in stroke) and heart disease. It can also help mental and cognitive development.
  5. Good for skin and hair: Since vitamin B12 is responsible for cell reproduction, mutton is also great for healthy skin, hair and nails.
  6. Mutton has some good quality fat: It has high unsaturated fats and low saturated fats and cholesterol. It is therefore good for the heart and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. It has some bad fats as well.     One of best ways to eat mutton in a healthy way, according to the nutritionist, is to have it in an Indian curry. “Our Indian mutton curries are excellent for weight loss not just because of mutton but also because of the spices in it. Spices like cinnamon, bay leaf, peppercorns, clove and other spices that are commonly used in our curries, help burn fat and hence help you lose weight. Don’t forget to supplement the mutton curry with lots of salad to make it easy to digest.”
