This Bold, Beautiful Photo of Serena Williams Shows the World What Day It Is

Serena Williams is helping to turn the idea of a sexy calendar girl completely on its head. The tennis star stripped down and posed for a stunning photo in the 2016 Pirelli calendar, which revamped its creative direction this year by replacing models with women at the top of their fields. Annie Leibovitz photographed stars like Serena, Amy Schumer, and Yoko Ono in celebration of their accomplishments rather than their cup sizes.

Last year, the calendar made news when it featured plus-size model Candice Huffine. But this year, its producers were even more inclusive, selecting women of all different ages, races, sizes, expertise, and clothing choices. Yes, in many of the photos the women are actually wearing clothes—and sometimes (like in the case of musician and author Patti Smith below) lots of clothes:

Other women, like Serena and Amy Schumer, chose to reveal more of themselves. Amy looks 100 percent comfortable sitting on a stool and drinking a cup of coffee while wearing nothing but a pair of underwear. “I felt like I looked more beautiful than I ever have in my entire life,” she says in a promo video for the calendar. “And I felt like it looked like me.”

82-year-old Yoko Ono is also featured in the calendar, stepping out in a powerful tuxedo jacket and matching top hat.

Other women featured in the calendar include Selma director Ava DuVernay, artist Shirin Neshat, and 19-year-old writer Tavi Gevinson, who is the only woman in the calendar under the age of 30.
