The New Way to Tell Your Ex You Have Gonorrhea

The only thing worse than finding out you have an STD? Not finding out you have an STD when you do, in fact, have one—which is exactly what happens to tons of people who go untreated until symptoms appear. "In the majority of recent cases, these individuals [with gonorrhea] were treated in an emergency room or urgent care setting, indicating these cases progressed to symptoms, as opposed to being diagnosed through screening," said Joel McCullough, M.D., a health officer at the Spokane Regional Health District in Washington, in a release about a recent gonorrhea outbreak in the area.

Many STDs, such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, are treatable—but can cause serious and sometimes permanent health problems (including infertility) if left undiagnosed and untreated. But after finding out the bad news that you have an STD, who wants to contact everyone you've had sex with and let them know that they, too, could be infected? Yeah, not exactly a fun phone call. So you can see why lots of people decide to opt out of that conversation altogether.

Luckily, some health departments and STD clinics will do the dirty work for you—including Spokane Regional Health District. Here's how it goes down, according to a recent NPR article:

"Some people cry, some people get really angry, some people don't want to talk to me at all," Halloran [a health department employee] says. "A lot of people are really anxious to know who it was [who gave them the infection]. Of course, I can't say anything whatsoever that would identify that."

After all the sobbing and/or shouting, though, the person can get tested and, if necessary, get medical attention. If you find out you have an STD and don't live in an area where your health department will contact former partners for you, the online service inSPOT provides a similar service—with a cheeky e-card to boot:

And if you don't think you have an STD? Well, you still might want to get tested if you haven't been recently—it could prevent you from having to make an awkward phone call down the road.
