In a decision that is likely to affect nothing, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has officially banned marijuana at the 2018 festival, even though weed became legal for recreational use in California on Jan. 1, 2018. Weed has technically been "not allowed" at Coachella in previous years, so this year will be exactly the same in that there will absolutely not be any marijuana – none at all! – consumed on festival grounds in 2018.
The new law in California allows individual cities and towns to opt out of legal sale and distribution of recreational weed, and Indio, the city where Coachella is held, is one of the cities that's chosen to opt out. So, in the words of Coachella organizers and this 2017 article from the Los Angeles Daily News, sorry, bro. No weed allowed. Truly a big ol' bummer, especially considering weekend two kicks off on April 20.
