If you aren't sexting, you're missing out. The digital get-down is becoming a mainstay of hot-and-heavy relationships.
A study conducted by the University of Michigan looked at the sexting behavior of 3,447 men and women between the ages of 18 and 24 and found that sexting (defined as "sending explicit messages or images by phone") is not only practiced, but common: 28.2% of men and women both send and receive sexts.
And get this: The study found no reason not to hit send on sexting. While the practice is often associated with horror stories, such as leaked nude photos and extramarital scandals, the University of Michigan's study suggests sexting can be part of a healthy relationship.
Because the only thing better than sexting is actually sexing it up, we’ve picked the help of Olivia Baniuszewicz and Debra Goldstein, authors of Flirtexting. Here, the top three ways to sext yourself to the bedroom (or the couch, kitchen table… or wherever suits your fancy):
1. Create Mystery Sexting should be a digital prelude to sex. “If you reveal everything in text messages, what’s for him to look forward to?†says Goldstein. Text him before your date that you are turned on just thinking about touching him. It’ll rev his engine big time. What’s more, Golstein recommends not including your whole face in pictures. It’s all about plausible deniability should the pics get shared later. Try this: Snap some pics of a single body part at a time. That way, you keep your face out of shots, max out the mystery, and can send not one, but about a gazillion new pics over time. (Bashful? Here's how to look better naked.)
2. Be Coy The easiest way to boost anticipation: Make him wait. Letting him dangle a bit between your messages. Always take a bit longer to respond than he does. “Timing is almost important as what you are writing,†Goldstein says. If you tell him what you’re wearing as soon as he asks, he won’t have any time to fantasize about what it might be. Plus, it comes off as a little needy. And as you've probably figured out, no guy likes that.
3. Get Comfortable Rather sext sans pictures? When you aren’t in public? That’s totally cool. The whole benefit of sexting is that it’s a casual, safe way to express your sexuality, especially if you find face-to-face dirty talk intimidating, Baniuszewicz says. Do what makes you feel comfortable. If your partner asks you to send a pic and you're a bit nervous, ease into things using the funny approach: Take a picture of your elbow and send it with a text reading “guess what body part this is.†Sexting should be fun and pressure-free.
