Rainy-Day Dates

I hate the rain—mostly because it makes my hair frizzy.

But there was no rescheduling this date. It was happening rain or shine. So I put a bottle of hair serum in my purse and headed out the door to meet TallDarkandHandsome on our second date.

We met at the Angelika to see The Artist. Now, normally I don’t like to go to a movie with a guy before I’m past getting to know him, but this wasn’t just sitting in a big, darkened theater munching on buttery popcorn, avoiding any real conversation. It was a real, cultural experience. I mean, the Angelika. That’s an institution. I had wanted to go there since I first heard it mentioned on Friends. And it left us plenty to discuss.

After the movie, we went on our way to a fun, little, hole-in-the-wall coffee shop to talk about the movie, what we thought of it, and our general musings on film in general. On the crowded streets of lower Manhattan, there was no room for both of our umbrellas, so I put mine away and he pulled me close under his. I can’t say I minded—but I still slipped into the bathroom as soon as we got to the coffee shop. My hair was rebelling. Big time.

Frizzy hair aside, it was definitely one of my best dates on a rainy day.

Here, our Facebook friends’ favorite rainy-day dates, along with some of my tips to get the biggest bang (get it?) from them:

Indoor Go-Kart Racing Make things interesting by placing some bets on who will win. The wagers can range from an innocent kiss on the cheek to some serious between-the-sheets action, depending, of course, on your relationship.

Playing in the Rain So fun. So playful. I love it. Choose your shirt and bra wisely. And wear waterproof mascara.

Working Out Getting physical with your beau can be a big turn on. For me, there’s nothing hotter than a firm butt in thin sweat pants. I just want to bite it. I digress… Check out this couple’s yoga routine.

Playing Board Games My favorite: Mexican Train Dominoes ($15, amazon.com). Bets come in handy here. Plus since you aren’t going to be behind the wheel of a Go-Kart, you can drink (responsibly).

Staying in Bed All Day Whether you are watching movies, cuddling, or trying every sex position possible, this is a perfect way to spend a rainy day. Best reserved for established couples. Being “trapped” together all day on the third date could go very, very badly.

Going to a Bookstore Reading Cozy and intellectual. A perfect pair. Just don’t drag him to hear an author talk about her latest self-help book. Save that one for your girlfriends.

Curling Up in Front of a Fireplace with Some Wine This date is a rom-com classic. And why shouldn’t it be? Note: Be wary of red wines. They can make your teeth purple. (I know from experience.)

Going to the Movie Theater For a twist on a classic, pack appetizers, dinners, and desserts. (Finally, a use for that mongo bag of yours!) Then, hop to three different movies, eating a course during each movie. Note: Pack foods that don’t smell.

Taking a Steamy Bath I’ve never been a big bath person, but I think this idea still deserves top billing. One caveat: Be clean when you get into the tub. No one should be climbing into a candle-lit bath with a boy with furry legs or stinky pits.

Cooking Together There is something so intimate about cooking together… Is it creating something together? Tasting sauces off of wooden spoons? I don’t know. But don’t fight it. Just steer clear of onions and garlic.

Wandering Around a Museum This is a great way to expand your conversations and share your passions—granted you stick together and don’t read every plaque. Check out my other tips for going on a museum date.

Happy dating! And if you venture outdoors on your rainy-day date, make sure to pack all things anti-frizz!
