Low sex drive? Boost your libido with pomegranate juice

As delicious as it is, pomegranate is a fruit also known for its many medicinal qualities. Peeling and eating the fruit is an exercise in patience but one that has a lot of cool rewards. The each of the ruby-red pearls of the superfood is bursting with nutrients that can address a whole lot of health problems, from cancers to cardiovascular diseases. If all these disease-fighting awesomeness wasn’t enough, pomegranate can also give you a boost of testosterone. So if you are struggling with a lacklustre sex drive, consider having a glass of pomegranate juice every day.

In men, a low libido is the result of ageing, although other health conditions can also contribute to it. With age, men find their sex drive waning. Erections take longer to develop and harder (pardon the pun) to sustain. One of the medical reasons for a dipping sex drive is low levels of the male hormone testosterone, a component important to the male sex drive.

In a study1 conducted by researchers at Queen Margaret University in Edinburg found that drinking pomegranate juice caused a surge in the testosterone levels of the participants of the study. A total of 60 subjects, both men and women, participated for a period of two weeks. By the end of the study, the saliva of the participants was tested for the presence of testosterone. It was noted that the testosterone levels the subjects increased by 24 percent. Additionally, there was also a reduction in their blood pressure and improvement of their cardiovascular health.

Another study2 published in the Clinical Nutrition in 2008 found that pomegranate was also responsible for improving sperm quality, spermatogenic cell density, antioxidant activity  and testosterone levels in male rats.

If the no show in the bedroom is because of dipping testosterone levels, a tall glass of pomegranate juice every day for may help. If you are into juicing, pair pomegranate with other testosterone-boosting ingredients like pineapple, ginger, cinnamon etc. Here’s a list of best foods for testosterone.
