Let There Be Light: How To Embrace Shimmery Make-Up This Winter, Celebrity-Style

Shimmer may not be a staple for many Western make-up artists, but it is HUGE in Korean and Japanese beauty, which focuses on brightening the face with make-up a great deal. It’s the perfect way to replicate summer skin in winter.

This is because skin tends to get dull and lose its luminosity in the colder months. Going for dewy, shimmery make-up gives the illusion of brighter skin. So, your entire face looks like it is lit from within. And it’s not just us – celebrities love shimmery make-up, too. From eye shimmer-obsessed Aishwarya Rai, to lip shimmer-loving Jacqueline Fernandez, there are many celebrities who are a lesson in glowy make-up.

Shimmer can light up your face.

Shimmery make-up basically contains loads of tiny, light-reflecting particles. These particles obviously make an area look more fresh and lit-up, thereby making dull skin seem healthy and glowing even if it isn’t.

The obvious first place to start? Eyes, of course.

In Western countries, people usually add matte pigments for colour, and then top that with shimmer for a little freshness. In Japan, people use shimmer on their lids alone.

We recommend going for a creamy shimmer eyeshadow first, and then layering on powder shimmer, for best results. This ensures the shadow does not disappear by the end of the day, as layering these textures binds them together. For inspiration, look to Aishwarya Rai for some gorgeous eye make-up looks.

There are many ways to wear shimmer eyeshadow.

People commonly use shimmery colours to highlight their inner corners.

Some use paler shimmer shades to add a frosty touch to the lower half of the upper lids. Paired with loads of mascara, this look is a perfect match for dark, bold lipcolours.

Of course, shimmer can also be worn in multiple colours, to create a smokey eye, provided your products are pigmented enough.

Shimmery eyeliners are a perfect match for the cold weather.

Add some Frozen-like chill to your winter make-up with a shimmery eyeliner. A lot more pigmented than eye-shadows, shimmery liners are easier to control. Shades like blue, purple, and sea-green are perfect choices for shimmery eyeliners, but a gold shimmery liner is something likely to become your favourite. Use it to add a warm light to your eye area.

Shimmery highlighters are a must have if you want to look trendy.
