It's So Cold in PyeongChang, Olympians' Skis Are Literally Turning Into Garbage

PyeongChang will undoubtedly host the coldest Winter Olympics in years. It is already so cold over there, in fact, skis are being ruined, Reuters reports.

“One of the coaches said they are throwing the skis out after today,” start crew technician Craig Randell, who is working on the slalom-related courses at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre told the site. “You can’t do anything about it but with the cold temperatures, the snow adheres to the ski base and twists it. They are turning their skis to garbage real fast.”

Per NPR, it is meant to warm up a bit in PyeongChang next week. That said, Friday’s Opening Ceremony will see temperatures in the low-20s and a wind chill of about 14 degrees.

According to Randell, it’s necessary to trash skis affected by the snow. Though it might seem wasteful, snow adhering to the skis can slow down athletes, and when you’re competing at the most elite level, “every little millisecond, every little idiosyncrasy counts.”
