It’s Tough To Get Rid Of Bad Breath Once You Get It. Here Are A Few Natural Ways That Work

Before you go to bed, dip your toothbrush in baking soda and brush your teeth and tongue thoroughly. After that brush your teeth as usual. Baking soda balances the acids in your mouth to get rid of bad breath and other dental problems.

Bad breath or halitosis is an embarrassing problem, especially in social situations. People with bad breath feel awkward to stand too close to someone and it can even affect their self-confidence. Waking up next  to your partner with a case “sewer breath” puts a damper on even the most ardent and romantic mood. Besides, no one wants to wake up in a cloud of unpleasant smells. You may have despaired over your bad breath for years, but here’s how to get rid of bad breath permanently.

Everyday Tips To Get Rid Of Bad Breath

While good oral hygiene habits won’t banish that foul odor overnight, incorporating these practices into your daily routine can help prevent and get rid of bad breath for good.

Brush Before Bed

The first step in your battle against chronic bad breath is to brush your teeth gently but very thoroughly before you go to sleep – EVERY night! You would have noticed a white coating on your tongue – this  layer is the result of debris, dead cells and bacteria and it is one of the most common causes of bad breath. Use a tongue scrapper to gently scrape the top of your tongue to remove this layer. Make your own baking soda and water mouthwash and use it to gargle after each meal as this will dislodge any food particles that are stuck between your teeth. Your mouth should be as clean as possible before you go to bed as this will reduce the growth of bacteria that cause the bad breath.

Use Natural Breath Fresheners

Clove, cardamom, and fennel are very effective home remedies for bad breath and you can chew on a couple of these spices to prevent bad breath. They also increase the production of saliva and this will stop the proliferation of bacteria that cause bad breath.

Apples are also a great way to beat bad breath. The fiber in apples helps to cleanse your mouth and teeth and acts as a natural mouth freshener.

A glass of hot tea made with fenugreek leaves (methi) will also help to prevent and cure bad breath.

Chew on a few fresh mint leaves (pudina) as this will eliminate noxious sulfur odors and give you minty fresh breath. Alternatively, crush several fresh mint leaves and add it to a small bottle along with hot water. Shake this well and then use it as a cleansing natural mouthwash. This bad breath remedy will also prevent gum and tooth infections.

Stay Hydrated

Saliva acts as a a constant cleansing agent and prevents the growth of bacteria in your mouth. Since saliva is made up of 99.5 % water; consequently the production of saliva depends on your water intake. Drink approximately 2 liters of water a day but increase your intake on days when you go to the gym. There are even apps to remind you to drink water in case you are someone who gets so caught up with your day that you forget to drink water. Avoid sugary drinks as bad bacteria feed on sugar and then thrive which in turn increases your bad breath. Dry mouth is a common problem associated with mild dehydration so drink small amounts of water throughout your day to keep your bad breath under control. You should drink about half a glass of water before you go to bed so that you remain hydrated through the night and don’t wake up with foul morning breath.

Foods That Cause Bad Breath

Onion and garlic are the 2 most common foods that cause bad breath. These foods contain sulfuric compounds which gives you egg-smelling breath. Foods that have strong odors such as fish and coffee can give you bad breath so make sure that you gargle your mouth well after consuming these foods. Have a bowl of yogurt after your meals as this will help to bolster healthy gut flora. Reduce your intake of junk food and preserved foods as many of these have sugars that increase the population of unhealthy bacteria. Alcohol beverages too cause stinky breath so keep your Friday night binging to a minimum!

On the other hand, there are certain foods that fight bad breath – foods like fruit, green vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grain foods aid digestion and this prevents bloating and foul smelling burps. Poultry, low-fat dairy products,  pumpkin seeds, and legumes are a good source of zinc and including them in your diet will help to cure bad breath. Zinc is a good bad breath cure as it has natural antimicrobial properties that kill the unhealthy bacteria in your mouth.

The main problem with chronic bad breath is that you will not experience immediate results which is why most people give up on home remedies for bad breath. However, you can try several options until you find a bad breath remedy or several remedies that will help to get rid of your problem once and for all… enjoy baby fresh breath for life!
