If you’ve ever been to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, you know the entire museum is one big spiral ramp with art installations along the way.
So I thought my How About We date idea, “How About We Go to the Guggenheim and Walk in Circles,†was pretty darn clever. And wouldn’t you know, a fellow art-lover thought I was pretty darn clever, too.
We met in front of the museum, walked inside, and began our first date. It was great to have a first date that didn’t feel like a cross-table interrogation. It was so much more enjoyable than dinner or drinks. I felt like we were both able to actually be ourselves.
I will admit, however, that the museum date was a bit challenging for this first timer. I wasn’t quite sure when to talk about art, when to talk about myself, when to talk about him, and when to just shut up. And what do I do with my coat?
To save you some of my initial confusion, here are some museum-date rules for all my art-loving daters out there:
• Start small. Go to a museum you can comfortably see in one or two hours. If the museum is bigger than that, opt for exploring one particular exhibit or attraction. • Don’t worry about squeezing in small talk—it’s not going to happen in a museum. If you are really hankering for the deets on his job, childhood, etc, go for a cup of coffee after you’ve finished up at the museum. • Check your coat. You will just feel (and act) awkward carrying it around. • Don’t read every plaque. It might make for a good educational experience, but it doesn’t make for a very interactive date. • Stay with your date (duh!). • Wear comfortable shoes. Hobbling around a museum is not fun—or sexy. • While he might buy your ticket, don't expect him to. Meet outside the museum or in the front entrance to make things easy either way. • Unless you are both really into icky stuff, steer clear of any gory displays like BODIES...The Exhibition.
