Have a Healthy Pregnancy

Get Fit Before Getting Knocked Up

Being more than 20 percent above your ideal weight during pregnancy increases your chances of pregnancy-related diabetes and high blood pressure — both of which can linger or reappear after giving birth. Your goal: Get your pre-pregnancy blood pressure down to 140/90 or lower.

Have Your Kids Before You're 35

You'll have a lower risk for complications such as pregnancy-related diabetes and high blood pressure. Also, your eggs are less likely to be defective (they accumulate mutations as you age), so you'll have a much lower chance of carrying a baby with Down syndrome or another chromosomal defect.

Space Them at Least 18 Months Apart

Studies show that births that are closer together use up too much of Mom's energy and fat stores.

Consider Having Several Children

This could be especially helpful if you have a family history of breast cancer. A full-term pregnancy reduces your breast cancer risk by about 6 percent — likely because pregnancy halts menstruation and the cell divisions that occur in your breasts along with it. The protective effect increases with each pregnancy.
