Ever Wondered Why People Say "Say Cheese" Before Taking Pictures?

“Say cheese!” - are two words we've been saying all our lives right before taking a picture. But have you ever wondered why? Whenever someone says these two words, an ear to ear smile spreads across our faces. Is that a little weird? We've been conditioned to smile like that for every picture we take.

Well, "say cheese" has a backstory. A school of thought - gives a logical reason - says that the “ch” sound causes one to position the teeth in a way, that when the long “ee” sound parts their lips, it forms something close to a smile.

The phrase was first used in the 1940s. According to Joseph E. Davies, former Ambassador to Franklin D. Roosevelt, it’s an instant formula for smiling when you're having your picture taken and it is certain to make you look pleasant, no matter what you’re thinking. Mr Davies revealed the formula while having one of his own pictures taken on the set of “Mission to Moscow.”

"It’s simple. Just say 'Cheese,' it’s an automatic smile. I learned that from a politician, an astute politician, a very great politician. But, of course, I cannot tell you who he was..." he once explained. It is often speculated that the “politician” he was referring to was Franklin D. Roosevelt himself.

Now, whether President Roosevelt came up with this phrase himself or learnt it from someone else, we don't really know. But as it turns out, after him, this phrase became popular and is still being used. Thanks, President Roosevelt, for we'll always be smiling in all our pictures, courtesy - you.
