But wait—doesn't adding something like chocolate (even just the flavor) to toothpaste seem…counterproductive? Actually, your toothpaste's flavor has no impact on how well it does its job, says Bennett Amaechi, Ph.D., a professor in the department of comprehensive dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

What's more important are the active ingredients in your tube—and which ingredients you look for will depend on what you're hoping to get out of your toothpaste, says Amaechi. Some brands use carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to help whiten your smile. Others might have triclosan, an antimicrobial ingredient that helps prevent gingivitis. Crest's new toothpastes contain sodium fluoride to fend off cavities.
So if you're looking for a change of minty flavor and aren't super concerned about whitening, these new toothpastes might be perfect for you. Just make sure to squeeze in some flossing, too!
