"I carry a baggie in my purse with about 20 products stuffed inside."

"For my job as a TV news reporter, I have to wear a lot of makeup--especially foundation, to cover my freckles," says Ruditzky, of Providence, Rhode Island. "Even off-camera, I wear foundation, powder, bronzer, eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara, lip- stick, and brow pencil. It's gotten so that I feel naked without makeup." How can she scale back and still look beautiful? Makeup pro Paula Dorf offered Ruditzky this pared-down approach.

Give lashes the squeeze
How's this for beauty irony: The step that can make the most impact on your looks doesn't even require makeup. "Always curl your lashes," Dorf says. "It will open up your eyes, so you won't need to wear as much mascara."

Let your skin breathe
"Nothing sends an overdone message like a thick, flat layer of foundation," Dorf says. A better option: a tinted moisturizer or a sheer, water-based foundation. Pat it into your skin with your fingers or lightly stipple it on with a sponge.

Remember: Line last
"When women line their mouth before applying lipstick, they tend to go outside the lip line, and it looks artificial," Dorf says. Instead, apply a sheer lip color that's a bit more intense than a gloss, then line your lips with a lip pencil in a matching shade for a natural finish.
