8 Foolproof Ways To Kill Boredom At Work?

Admit it, you've had those days at work, when you've sat in the front of the computer, staring at the screen without a single productive thought in your mind. You're distracted, irritated and just... bored. Such off days don't happen often, but when they do, they make you super unproductive and prone to procrastination and those eight hours feel like they've been stretching a month.

However, you can't be stuck in this rut forever. Workplace boredom can get stressful over a period and damaging. While sometimes it's a sign you should consider switching your job, in most cases it's a matter of being under or over utilised as an employee or just the odd slow day, in general.

So, how do you escape? Don't stress, we've found some tips that'll help you conquer boredom at work.

1. It's okay once in a while to scroll through the interwebs or read a book when you just can't look at another email or presentation. We understand, staying focused on work assignments and meetings for 8 hours isn't always possible. So, as long as you don't end up going overboard with it, we'd suggest you take a break, go look at some cat videos or just catch up on the book you've been putting away.

2. How about taking a few minutes off the schedule and learning a new skill? Not only will it give you a few moments away from what got you bored, you'll add more value to the resume. And THAT, we're sure, no employer will mind. It can be anything from learning a new language to a software.

3. Take ownership of a certain thing at the office, which isn't part of your daily work schedule. It can be anything from taking care of plants, being a floor marshal or even coaching co-workers and juniors in a new skill you've learnt. What this will do is give you a break from your everyday activities and make the dead time rewarding.

4. When boredom strikes, we'd suggest you take a walk or shift work to another location, temporarily. Now, this other place can be either in another part of your office or a nearby coffee shop; wherever you like. You'll be surprised how heading outdoors or shifting to a different corner provides new energy and a fresh perspective.

5. Treat yourself with some soulful music. Well, it can be rowdy numbers too. Anything that switches your brain to a different track for a while - be it relaxing or energising music. It's guaranteed to bring back your focus with a bang.

6. Also, there's a possibility the reason for boredom isn't work, but how you started your day or your commute to work. Yes, it can make a huge difference. If you've had a difficult morning or stressful time on your way to work - missed the train, too much traffic or anything else - it'll only ruin your remaining part of the day. What you can do is wake up early and not rush yourself into things. Maybe, instead of taking the train, carpool or take the bus.

7. Reschedule meetings if need be. A common mistake that we make is to start our day with meetings, which are, in most cases, long and unproductive. In case you can't reschedule them, just try to cut it short and make it more productive by coming up with new suggestions.

8. If all of the above ideas don't work, you should take a day or two off. Sometimes, all our mind and body needs is to relax and unwind. Do what you like - read, write, dance, etc. - or just don't do anything at all. Just get your mind off work. Trust us, this break will give you time to think about whether you want to go ahead with the same job or find a new one, apart from just refilling your sanity meter.
