5 desi foods that can help new mums get thick and glossy hair post delivery

A few months post her pregnancy, Kareena Kapoor Khan shared a well-kept secret. Just like many expecting women, she was also privy to hairfall during pregnancy.

However, she managed to maintain her glossy tresses, thanks to superfoods recommended by her dietician Rujuta Diwekar. Which incidentally were continued well after her delivery so that she has the same thick hair post pregnancy as well.

But she is not alone. Many new mums are often taken aback by the continuous postpartum hairloss, even though it's perfectly normal.

Loss of hair post pregnancy

You may know that almost 85-90 percent of our hair is always in the growing stage. While 15-10 percent are always resting. And when you shampoo or brush your hair, those in the resting stage fall out. So on an average, women lose about 100 hair per day.

But during pregnancy, the estrogen levels in the body rise, thereby prolonging the growing stage. So fewer hair end up resting and very few fall out. So you may generally have long, luscious hair during pregnancy.

After you give birth, the estrogen levels in  the body plummet and several hair follicles now enter the resting stage. So four to five months post delivery, you'll notice a large amount of hairfall.

Although, it must be noted that not all women go through the same loss of hair post pregnancy. For some women it is quick and high in volume, while for others it may not occur as abnormally.

So what can new mums do to stop postpartum hairfall? Well, the first thing to do is to improve your diet, starting from your pregnancy.

Desi foods that help maintain lush hair post pregnancy

As celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar points, expecting mums as well as new mums must include the following four foods in their diet to maintain a lush mane and reduce hairfall.

  • Rice (helps strengthen the gut) and keeps the body healthy, thereby reducing hairfall
  • Coconut (especially the malai) and oil which mimic sebum that stops hairfall
  • Handful of cashews every day since they're rich in iron and magnesium, and prevent loss of hair
  • Sweet Sesame (til) boosts scalp blood circulation thereby keeping the hair follicles healthy and the hair growing

Apart from these, new mums must also include desi foods that are rich in vitamin, A, B, C, D and E.

  • Foods rich in vitamin A such as carrots, sweet potato and palak (spinach) help with overall growth of the body. They also assist the skin glands in producing sebum. This is an oily substance that helps moisturise and keep the hair healthy.

  • Foods rich in vitamin B such as whole grains, poultry, meat, seafoods as well as leafy greens contain biotin, which is one of the most important compound for hair growth.
  • Foods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits, guava, strawberries and bell peppers have collagen, which absorbs iron and keeps the hair healthy and lush.
  • Foods rich in vitamin D and E include fatty fish, cod liver oil as well as mushrooms, and sunflower seeds, almonds as well as avocados respectively. They are essential to create hair follicles as well as maintain antioxidant properties in the scalp.
