5 New Bar Soaps You'll Love

Bar soap used to be the go-to for hand and body cleansing—but then liquid suds came along, proving just how drying the bars were. “Bar soaps of the past contained alkaline and had higher pHs,” says New York City-based dermatologist Dendy Engelman, M.D., of MDCS. Luckily, updated versions are much more hydrating. “Many of the newer bar soaps are formulated without detergents that can dry out the skin, they’re lower in pH to match the skin’s normal pH levels, and more importantly, the new class of bar soaps also tend to contain better ingredients, such as oils—argan, tea tree, rose, olive—or organic extracts that help nourish the skin while cleansing,” says Engelman.

These new-age bar soaps also have benefits over their liquid counterparts. “Bar soaps help promote circulation, as the bar can be used to provide a gentle massage,” says Engelman. “They provide better exfoliation, too—you would have to use a loofah for similar results with liquid soap.” Ready to try one for yourself? The picks on the next slides come highly recommended by Engelman.
