When you’re trudging to the gym after work (or rolling out of bed pre-dawn to get there), styling your 'do probably falls to about, oh, zero on your priority list. But it is possible to break out of a ponytail rut with minimal effort. Enter these fuss-free looks that take barely any time to create, stay put while your sweating, and can even be constructed the night before a morning sweat sesh. (So your only job is finding a clean sports bra.) Bonus: They're all super on-trend, inspired by looks seen on celebs, the runway, and Instagram.

The Half-Up Topknot

For all the women running around with a chic lob haircut, this is the hero solution for hair that won’t fit into a high pony. Section the top portion of your hair (ear to ear) into a slightly messy bun at the top of your head, scrunch for a little texture, and—presto! Your workout just got some extra edge.

The Simple Side Braid

Add a touch of boho to a plain old pony (and hide any greasy bangs in the process). Simply pull out an inch and a half or two inch section of hair and braid it all the way to the ends, then sweep the braid back with the rest of your hair into a messy ponytail. Add two or three more braids throughout the head to elevate the look.

The Tiered Ponytail

Runners who suffer from ponytail whiplash and bobbing buns—this one’s for you. In case you’ve forgotten from 5th grade, just secure a half-up pony using the hair above your ears, then make your way down the back of your head, merging the secured ponytail with loose hair to create additional "tiers."

The Fishtail Braid

Looks complicated, but master this simple technique and you’ll be busting out mermaid braids on the train platform. Start by dividing your hair in half at the back of your head. Pull a small piece of hair from the right side over to the left, then pull a piece from the left side and bring it over to the right. Keep going until you run out of hair, and don’t worry about ending up with a perfect plait—this look is best with a little mess to it.

Boxer Braids

The Kardashians and Katy Perry may be all over this look, but we’re obsessed because even the jerkiest interval circuit can’t yank these puppies free. Make a part down the middle of your hair and start a reverse French braid (watch a tutorial), looping hair under, instead of over the other strands, which allows the braids to pop out.
