According to CNN, 1,200 security guards assigned to the Olympic facilities in PyeongChang, South Korea, have been preventatively pulled from duty. A sudden outbreak of norovirus is believed to have infected at least 41 guards.
A press release from the PyeongChang Organizing Committee (POCOG) confirms 32 cases of diagnosed norovirus, 21 of whom are on the Games’ security force. The other 11 official diagnoses are of visitors. Symptoms of those diagnosed include headaches, vomiting and diarrhea.
The Committee explains they are working quickly to understand how the virus originated and was transmitted. SB Nation reports the South Korean military has been called in to provide reinforcement until the root of the problem has been identified. Nine hundred military personnel are currently on duty.
The Winter Olympics begin on Friday.
